"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf"

I've always loved the analogy of ocean waves representing labour contractions. They are strong, they wash over you, and if you don't move with them they can overtake you.

If you imagine swimming far out in the middle of the ocean with a surfboard, but no knowledge on how to use it, you'll be stranded and helpless.

But if you learn how to surf before going in the ocean (practicing comfort techniques before labour begins), you will have a much easier time manipulating the waves and making them work for you.

Simple things you can do to prepare are: attending a childbirth class, hiring a doula, reading up on comfort techniques and pain management.

The waves and contractions are a powerful force, and they are going to happen whether you want them to or not. But you need to learn to accept them & surf them, and it will be smooth seas.
