I am lucky because I get to drink a delicious, homemade green smoothie practically every morning for about 5 years now.
It started when my dad was sick. He had a feeding tube for a while, and when his swallowing reflex came back it was too weak. He wasn't able to eat solid food, and as a lot of us know, hospital food is garbage. So I would make a blender full of green smoothie every day. I would drink one, and I would bring two thermos' full for my dad. We would give him one when we got there, and one for dessert after the hospital dinner.
It was important to me that he get the nutrition he needed; he was always a healthy eater. Everyone told us that the smoothies are what helped him live as long as he did.
Even after he died I was in the habit of making smoothies every day, so I would pour the contents into 3 or 4 big glasses and have one each morning until I needed to repeat the process.
In my opinion this is the best breakfast (or sometimes pre-breakfast) to have. It wakes me right up in the morning, gives me plenty of vitamins & nutrients, and is seriously just so tasty.
I've had a lot of experience mixing & matching and I boiled it down to one recipe that works super great for me. Sometimes depending on what fruit is available I'll change it up a bit, but the basic smoothie outline for me is:
- Almond milk (enough to cover the greens)
- 1-2 handfuls of spinach
- 3-4 lettuce leaves
- 1 avocado
- 1/3 pineapple
- 1-2 mangoes
- 1 pear
- 2-5 bananas
Smoothies can work great as a meal replacement too if you're trying to lessen your food intake but still get the good stuff your body needs.
Tasty tasty goodness every day!
