Waiting on Birth
Right now I am sitting here at home, waiting for the phone call. My client had to go to triage this morning, and was approx. 1cm dilated when they checked her there. She is currently waiting to be admitted and will let me know once she is. Then hopefully it won't be too long until she is ready for me to join her, and not too long after that until her baby is born!
This 'on-call' life can bring lots of anxiety as I try my best to remain patient. But I am keeping myself in birth mode. Working on this blog, going over her birth wish list & hospital checklist, skimming my birth books. My doula bag is packed and ready to go. I have no prior obligations to take care of. And when she says go, I go. That can happen anywhere in the next 5 minutes or the next 12 hours.
That's the thing with birth, it has a mind of it's own. It does not follow a clock.
The biggest skill that I get to practice when waiting on a birth is definitely patience; something I've always had a lot of. But there's a difference in the patience you have when waiting on something in which you know when it will happen, and waiting on something that is completely up in the air.
It is something I have no control over so I just need to take a deep breath, trust in the process, and hope for the best. A baby will be born soon though, and that is pretty damn magical. I cannot wait!
