Nimira's Birth Story
*All photos were taken by me. I was given permission from my client to use them*
It's been almost a week since my last post as I have been quite busy indeed! I had my client's birth thursday, followed by my doula hangover, my full-time barista job, and my boyfriend's ACL surgery.
Today I visited my client Nimira and her adorable son Rumi, and showed her the photos I took of her birth. She gave me permission to use them on my website so here I am writing this post! Been looking forward to sharing this experience since it happened!
Nimira was scheduled for an induction on thursday morning, but little mister had plans of his own! When Nimira noticed some blood when she woke up she went straight to the hospital and they told her she was already 1 cm dilated and that they didn't need to induce after all. They gave her pitocin to try to get things going (as hospitals do).
I spoke with her again after she was admitted, where they checked her again and she was now at 3 cm. I joined her at 4:30pm at which time her partner went back home to get the hospital bags that they had left. She sat on the birth ball for quite some time and I watched her have some of her contractions. Let me just tell you, she ROCKED them! Even though she was on pitocin and they were coming on quite strong she went into her own little zone during each of them. I had brought my bluetooth speaker and we were listening to ocean sounds, a very fitting vibe as she said the contractions felt just like waves. Even the nurses were surprised with how great she was doing (but that's women for ya, strong as hell!)
We tried some different positions, she ate and drank a bit, and the surges starting coming on very strong. At around 7:30pm she decided to have an epidural and we found out that she was at 7 cm. The epidural took a little while to kick in but it made the pain much more manageable for her. This gave her a chance to rest. We changed the music to some night time jazz which totally changed the vibe, it was awesome.
At 9pm she was around 9 cm so we just had to keep letting her body do it's thing. She had an amazing room, lots of space, TV and everything, so we watched an episode of The Simpsons, then some HGTV. This caused some nice laughter to get that oxytocin flowing. The nurses wanted to wait a little bit longer for baby to descend a bit more, so at 11:30pm they called in the team so that she could have this baby! She only pushed for about 10 minutes, and with the help of a vacuum, Rumi emerged! Born at 11:55pm on January 26th, 2017. Weighing 6 lbs. 11 oz.
And thus, a mother was born!
Rumi immediately went skin-to-skin with mama, and after she delivered the placenta and the doctor was finished up, Nimira started breastfeeding.
Nimira, Rumi and I went for a lovely winter walk on my visit today. Mama and baby are doing just great.
Birth will never not amaze me. I cry every time.
I am so thankful to all my clients who let me into their lives and get to be there for such an incredible experience.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
