What to Pack in Your Birth Bag

Previously we've spoken about my doula bag; what I bring with me to every birth. But today it's all about YOU! We're going to focus on what you mamas need to bring with you to the hospital/birth centre when it's time to meet your little one!

It's best to pack your bag ahead of time, perhaps when you're around 8 months pregnant because you never know when baby will decide to come. Have it ready by the door so you can just grab it and go.

Feel free to pack as little or as much as you want. Some women have 1 bag, some have 3, it's entirely up to you and what you're comfortable with.

For Your Baby

-A properly installed car seat

-Diapers and wipes (the hospital usually provides them but it doesn't hurt to be extra prepared)

-4 or so sleepers/onesies in newborn and 0-3 month sizes (you never know how big baby will be!)

-A going home outfit if you feel like having something special for them to wear

-Hats

-Coconut oil/olive oil to use before diapering to prevent meconium from sticking to baby's bum

-Receiving blankets

-Baby wash (if you choose to wash baby in hospital bring your own wash, it'll be gentler)

For Your Support Person

-Comfortable shoes and clothes to labour in, and a change of clothes as well to feel fresh

-A bathing suit if you want them in the tub with you

-Toiletries (mouth wash is a must! Labouring women do not need to smell anyone's breath)

-Deodorant

-Money for snacks if you don't bring your own

-Snacks (nothing that smells too strong)

-Phone, charger, camera

-Something to keep them entertained while you rest, like a book

-List of people to call

-Labouring mamas ID and information so they can check you in when you get there

For You

-Comfortable clothes to labour in. Pack layers, pack a few things like a robe, cotton pants and tops, sports bras, a bathing suit if you'll feel uncomfortable being nude if you labour in water

-Slippers and/or flip flops, and socks

-Phone & charger

-Hair elastics/head bands

-A copy of your birth plan

-Music to listen to and/or magazines to read

-Glasses if you wear them as it's not recommended to push with contacts in

-Toiletries

-Comfy clothes with room to breathe for after baby is born

-A nursing bra

-Maternity underwear that you're okay throw out after

-Maxi pads

-Your own pillow if you like (make sure to use a bright colourful pillow case so it doesn't get mistaken as the hospitals), and blanket

-Lotion

-Snacks (things that are easy to eat in labour like fruit, juices, protein bites, nuts, etc.)

A few fun things to bring with to the hospital. Coconut oil for massage and on baby's bum. No-sugar-added fruit juice for energy in labor. A polaroid camera.
