The Power of Music

Music is a universal language. It has the ability to transport you to another time, another place.
You can put yourself in any mood you choose, you just need to pick the right song.

Listening to your favourite songs is also a super powerful tool to use in labour. Some benefits of listening to music in labour (from Made For Mums) are:

•    Familiar music helps you feel calm and in control
•    Music can reduce anxiety and assist in pain relief
•    Your music helps to make the labour room ‘your own’
•    Music blocks out other distracting and unwanted sounds
•    Music can help you to move & staying mobile can help your labour and birth
•    Labour can be a long ‘journey’; having music to listen to can act as a welcome distraction

Now think about when you're not in labour. Those benefits still apply! If you're stressed, or lonely, or just need a little something, music can help!

At my front desk job, I hear a lot of sounds that sometimes just become noise.
If there are two classes going on at the same time, I can hear the instructor's music (and their instructions) coming from both barre studios, plus the music playing at the computer where I'm sitting.
After hours like that, I need quiet time. And then I need my own music to ground myself again.

My parents were, and are, big music lovers. Growing up I was exposed to a lot of different stuff and I feel like I have a pretty huge appreciation for many types of music now.
There is no 'wrong' music to enjoy, as it was created to be heard and loved by anyone who wants to listen.
But a lot of things that I heard as a child is what makes me feel like me, if that makes sense.

After my dad died, I got a tattoo of words from a Grateful Dead song on my arm. His favourite band. We listened to them, and Bob Marley in his last few hours on earth.
Yeah, music is very important to me.

So I thought it would be fun to share some of my favourites with you all!
I have a lot of favourites, and it's hard to narrow it all down.

But these are the ones that just...fill me up. Any one of these songs have the ability to simply make me happy. And that's a powerful thing!
